Beard Balm Vs. Beard Oil

Over at Whiskey, Ink, & Lace, we have everything a man needs to keep his beard in check. From our Shave Kits for keeping it trimmed to our Beard Shampoo for keeping it clean, we do our best to make sure every beard can find its perfect match.

A common question when it comes to beard styling is: what’s the difference is between beard balm and beard oil?

Let’s start with the basics:

Beard oil is made up of viscous liquid oils, while beard balm is made of oils + wax for a thicker, pliable pomade-like texture.

Our beard oils are composed of jojoba oil, argan oil, and avocado oil. Each oil is carefully selected for its individual benefits. For example, jojoba and argan oils are mainly for moisturizing the skin underneath the beard, keeping it healthy, soft, breakout-free, and not itchy. The avocado oil is also vitamin-packed and contains high amounts of vitamin A, to give your beard a healthy appearance.

Our beard balms are composed of shea butter, apricot kernel oil, castor oil, rice bran oil, and candelilla wax. These are thicker oils/butters, and with the added wax, the balms provide a smooth, medium-firm hold to tame stray hairs. They're also deeply conditioning, keeping the beard looking healthy and soft.

How to use the two:

Flyaway Hairs >> Beard Balm:

Flyaways will be calmed with ease thanks to a little dab and smooth of beard balm. Keep your beard balm on you for quick fixes throughout the day.

Conditioning >> Beard Oil:

Beard oil makes a great beard conditioner because of the blend of moisturizing, vitamin-rich oils. Since beard oils are, well, oils, they’re just right for penetrating hairs and reaching the follicles below.

Longer Beards >> Beard Balm:

Longer beards will benefit from the pomade-like features of beard balm. The longer they get, the more balm you’ll want to have on you to keep that man mane tamed.

Itchy Skin >> Beard Oil:

Because it’s more emolient and moisturizing, beard oil calms skin beneath your beard, making it an effective anti-itch aid. Our beard oils are made with therapeutic essential oils, too, that also help soothe the itch. This makes ot great for beard growing beginners.

Shaping >> Beard Balm:

To whip your beard into shape, apply beard balm. Ours are formulated similar to our medium-firm hold pomade, so they can style and shape beards that sometimes may seem like they have a mind of their own.

Healthy Follicles to Encourage Growth >> Beard Oil:

Add some oomf to your hair follicles by using a beard oil. The conditioning impact will make follicles a little happier, encouraging growth.

Patchy Beards >> Beard Balm:

The thickening texture of the beard balms can help style your beard in such a way to give it a fuller appearance.

Use your beard balm and oil together for max styling.

Get all of the benefits by using beard oil and beard balm together. The best way to do this is to use the oil first, right after washing the beard in the morning. Then once that sets in, follow up with the beard balm to style it. Then at night before bed, apply a few more drops of beard oil for extra moisture.
