When buying a new beard oil or tattoo care, do you check the ingredients? Are you making sure that the ingredients in your hair and skin products are actually safe for you? Are the products you are using doing more harm than good?
Grab your favorite lotion and look at the ingredients list on the back. Most people would be shocked at the sheer amount of harmful ingredients, even in "natural" skincare, one of those ingredients most likely being an artificial fragrance or “perfume”.
Artificial fragrances are very common in skin, hair, and beard care products, along with other harmful fillers.
Many skincare and hair care companies mass-produce their products using the cheapest materials possible. They don’t care what’s in their products because they just want the biggest return on their investment.
At Whiskey, Ink & Lace, we care about YOU and your health.
A lot of people aren’t aware that these artificial fragrances aren’t natural. The FDA isn’t particularly strict about this and allows a certain amount of fragrance oil to be in “natural” labeled hair care and skin care products.
If a product is labeled as “natural”, don’t you think that should be a true statement?
We’re here to tell you about artificial fragrances and why you should absolutely avoid them.
What Are Fragrance Oils; AKA Artificial Fragrances?
Fragrance oils are synthetic compounds that are manufactured in a lab to create a specific smell or aroma, as opposed to being extracted from natural sources such as flowers or plants.
They are often used to imitate the scent of natural materials or to create unique scents that cannot be found in nature. Just one fragrance can be made with anywhere from 40-80 materials! Luxury perfumes are often made with five times that number.
Many of these synthetic chemicals are often petroleum-based and can include phthalates, which are harmful to human health.
Fragrance oils are commonly used in products such as skin, hair, and beard care, perfumes, colognes, candles, soaps, and other personal care and household items.
So what’s the big deal? YOUR HEALTH.
Are Fragrance Oils Dangerous? YES, and Here’s Why.
Studies upon studies have shown just how much fragrance oils have adverse effects on human health. You’d be shocked at how many dangers there are.
Some of the potential risks associated with these synthetic fragrance oils include but are definitely not limited to are:
- Neurotoxic Symptoms: Exposure to these fragrance chemicals can cause headaches, nausea, forgetfulness, loss of coordination, and other neurotoxic symptoms.
- Allergic Reactions: Many people may be allergic to certain fragrances, which can cause symptoms such as itching, redness, and swelling of the skin.
- Respiratory Problems: Many fragrance ingredients are respiratory irritants and sensitizers, which can trigger asthma attacks and aggravate sinus conditions. Along with irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.
- Hormonal Disruption: Studies have suggested that certain fragrance chemicals may disrupt the endocrine system or hormone function, which could lead to a variety of health problems such as endometriosis, reproductive disorders, and cancer.
- Environmental Pollution: Fragrance oils are not biodegradable and can cause pollution to the environment and bodies of water.
Scary, right? Is this information enough to make you second guess what products you and your loved ones are using? We think so!
This is just a brief summary of the endless list of dangers associated with fragrance oils.
Hopefully, this puts into perspective just how crucial it is to stay away from these artificial fragrances.
You may be thinking, “Okay, so what’s a safer and healthier alternative?”
Essential Oils; Our Holy Grail of Natural Scents.
Essential oils are natural, concentrated plant extracts that contain the natural aroma and flavor of the plant they are derived from. They are called "essential" because they contain the "essence" of the plant.
Essential oils are typically obtained through a process of distillation, which involves steaming or pressing the plant material (leaves, seeds, barks, roots, and rinds) to extract the oils.
Essential oils have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, aromatherapy, and perfumery. They are commonly used for their therapeutic properties.
Many essential oils are known to have many benefits such as reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and helping with pain management. They can be used for inhalation, topically, or internally under the proper guidance of healthcare professionals or aromatherapists.
They are also used in a wide range of personal care and household products such as soaps, lotions, and cleaning products.
When compared to fragrance oils, essential oils are all around better, healthier for you, and more environmentally friendly, which we love.
We take this same approach with our beard care and tattoo care products.
“No Fluff, No Filler.”
At Whiskey, Ink & Lace, we have always believed in using natural ingredients that are good for you, and are beneficial to you in some way. We strictly stay far away from artificial fragrance oils in our products.
Not only do we use natural ingredients, but we don’t add anything extra. No artificial colors or anything else to make our products pretty.
Every ingredient we choose is also doing something for you. For example, emulsifying wax takes oil and water and turns them into a cream. Our emulsifying waxes in our creams aren't just there to create a texture -- the wax we use is derived from olive oil to moisturize, as well as emulsify. This can be found in our Tattoo Cream, doing double duty to take care of your tattoos.
Whiskey, Ink & Lace is here to give you the best beard care and tattoo care on the market.
We provide our customers with products that go against the norm of the skincare and hair care market, prioritizing natural ingredients, customer health, and customer experience above margins, profits, and selfish endeavors.
